Hi all

I have a Mini Mayfair 1996, 1275 injection, and the engine isn't running correctly.

This all started happening at the same time:

Basically it struggles to start (most of the time, but not always) when it's cold, but is pretty much fine if the engine is already at normal temperature.

Once it is running, the idle speed varies wildly, changing between around 800 and 1200 rpm, but sticking towards 1200. (Before all this it idled at around 800 rpm without any problem). It also spikes to around 2000-2200 rpm randomly, and drops to almost stalling point randomly too.

When it is still cold, it drops more frequently, often to the point of stalling.

If you rev the engine, whereas it would usually drop back down to 800 rpm smoothly, it currently drops to around 2000-2000 rpm and hangs around there for maybe 5-30 seconds, before dropping down to the 800-1200 rpm range.

So - any ideas guys?

Thanks a lot in advance for any suggestions.

Edit:

Also just remembered, the varying revs are to thet point where even if you are driving along at a steady speed say 40 mph, you can feel it pulling forward and dropping back as it varies. Also, the unnaturally high revs sometimes mean that if you accelerate towards say 25 mph in 3rd gear, then shift to 4th gear, the car will keep accelerating itself for a bit without even pressing the accelerator.

I had that on my Spi, turned out to be a cable that had dropped out of the ECU. Try that first, if not get it tuned. Can't beat a good tuning.

Sounds like some of the problems I've been having, though they haven't caused me any trouble yet, so I haven't actually done anything about it. Mine is a carb Mini though, so I think my problems would probably clear up if I just gave my carburetor a good cleaning.

Hi guys thanks for your replies, sorry I didn't reply sooner.

I'm still having these problems (in fact funnily enough it is now slightly better when the engine is cold, and slightly worse when warm!)

mkw - I've checked the cables coming from the ECU and they all seem to be in.

I really want to avoid taking it to a garage though... In fact is there any way of reading the ECU to see if that is working using a PC or something?

I've also found a slight workaround, but it isn't very practical - if when coming to a stop you put it in a slightly too high gear, such as third, and let it struggle a bit trying to speed you up, then depress the clutch, as long as you don't press the accelerator it won't stall (but will still rev far too high). If you press the accelerator during this time, it will almost definately stall. This makes queueing going up a hill /very/ hard, especially if you read my other thread where my handbrake isn't working!

Thanks!
