Guys...

My missus has recently decided that the pistons in our car should be seen. So i now have a broken 306 turbo diesel car to use for donor parts. Can the turbo be used for a mini? It will probably be a long term project to get it to fit and eventually work but is it possible?

Cheers in advance

Jez

you'll need to find out what size it is (t3 t2 etc) and to compare it to the the t3 used for the mini (flange sizes, shapes, 4 or 3 stud etc). if it comes down to it anything can fit, but you might have to make a custom manifold for it.

my dad had a 306 DTurbo and he says it was a T4, and i think there is a problem putting a turbo designed for deisel use on a peterol engine because of the exhaust gas temeratures, dont quote me on that never tryed probably never will

I'm pretty sure that the turbo on a 306 Dturbo is a GT17 of some type, or an equivalent IHI/KKK unit on some of them. Certainly not a T4.

Personally I wouldn't use a diesel turbo on a petrol car due to higher exhaust gas temperatures and different characteristics, but I know of people who have used them.

any chance of a pic?

the GT 17 from the petrol saabs is meant to be a very good unit for a tuned turbo, if it is from a desil it may be a variable vane turbo which would probably be best steered clear of until more people have tried them out on petrol motors.

yep, I've heard many good things about T2's being used in mini's.
it's just a shame I cant afford to get insured on a modified engine yet :-

Indeed the T2 is 'in some opinions' better for the mini than the T3 as it it smaller and spins up quicker, meaning less lag. People have made there own manifolds, modified metro turbo manifolds or used new ones made especially for the T2 by Mirage. Search the forums you should find examples of these being done.

i think the turbo from a diesel will melt lol. Mini13, turbos with VATN<? variable vane turbo nozzle geometry are the best to use, the wastegate is the single most restrictive thing in a turbo setup, the variable vanes open and close depending on exhaust flow meaning the gasses are always impeding onto the turbine wheel at the right angle and speed meaning none has to be channeled off to stop the turbo over-boosting.
Gizzum get one from an Audi or VW, i work at a scrap yard and we always get them in and i have studied them many times.
I dont mean to be over opinionated by the way
