I have a HIF44 Carb which i want to put on my 998 engine. I have been told this will work, but i need to re-jet it so it doesn't over fuel the engine. Anyone know what i need to do? As i have just phoned minispares, and they said its not possible. Even though, when i spoke to the shop, not the mail order people, they said, the HI38 carb juet, will fit straight in the HIF44.
Could someone please help, im trying to get my mini on the road, ready for when i pass.
Thankyou..
Ian

Yup, a HIF44 will not work on a 998, unless its very breathed upon and demands a large amount of air/fuel mix.
As said above, a HIF38 is what you will need, much better suited to a 998 due to its smaller throat, and more reliable (generally) than the older HS4.
Sorry to disappoint, but you will not get a 998 running properly (i.e economically, reliably, powerfully and making good torque) with a HIF44, it just doesn't work.

As above the HIF44 is too big a choke for even a fairly modified 998...

been there, done that, it works.
when i took the 1380 out to replace some gaskets; in went the 1987 998cc city e engine. Didn't have an exhaust to suit, so used my big bore from the other engine.
it started fine, ran well but was a little bit smelly at times and lacked top end but for normal use you will get away with it.

Does really depend on your state of tune. If you have the 44 but no 38 I might be tempted to try it.

must admit, i ran a 44 on a 998 whilst twins where being rebuilt, ran ok, but just not brilliant.
got the twins on and ran so much better than any other carb i have used.
but for reliabilty and ease of use, hiff 38 (which is why i have 1 for the Mini)

id go for a 38 on a 998. Twins would give good response, but the balacing all the time would get tedious when the power difference aint recognisable...
wrong?

yes you are
my twins never went out of "tune"
they wont if built properly and set up properly.
as for the power issue, they might not give any more, but they have a "feel" and give better fuel.
