My '92 does not have a tach (only the standard 2-gauge binnacle). I bought a nice Sunpro rev counter unit that I'll be installing soon, but I wonder what the redline is for a non-modded, 1275 single-carb engine? I was planning on marking the redline, not the recommended shift point, but I can do that as well if someone has the figures.

Thanks in advance!

Suppose it is completely down to personal preferance at the end of the day. There is a defined "peak" for each engine, where anything over that peak, although isnt going to destroy the engine, wont gain anything further.

I'd hazard a guess around 5500 mark?

I'm much more concerned with the "destroy the engine" value... My 1275 is certainly fun, but fast, it ain't. :shifty:

I shift around 5500 on my 998. If your concerned just shift sooner. Think 5500 is normally the peak of torque or somthing (I may now be talking complete rot). If your concerned just shift sooner.

5500, unless balanced, lightened, or a centre strap has been fitted

6000 absolute max and your shift point is going to be around 3200 as max torque is around 2700

center strap not required unless the engine repeated stays above 7000 same can be said for lightening stuff, and the factory balance is good for 6500

Thanks very much guys! I'll set my redline at around 5500 and plan to shift at around 3000...

Bandit - I was thinking of mounting the tach down next to the binnacle OR actually on top of the dash rail... How's the visibility of the gauge down low like that? Mounting it on top of the rail is certainly more visible, but it's also less stealthy to people looking into the car.

I personally have mine mounted on top of my Works rally dash, so that its directly in my line of sight. This is mainly 'because i drive by mine, i keep shearing speedo cables so have the speeds worked out as per engine revs / gear.

The best option i would've poted for would be a basic RR session, then that'll definately tell you what the max is.

for best acceleration through gears, I found it best to shift at about 5000. the torque drops of quickly after this.
