Hi there.
I have just finished my new dash (pics as soon as I fix this!) and the oils gauge keeps leek from where the line buts upto the gauge. the way it work is its just metal on metal that is tighted togeter by a nut over the top of it (its rather standard) anyway I got oil all over my foot while going on my IM FINISHED YEPPIE drive........ stink. so, I got a washer and some RTV and pluged that bugger up good, and it lasted half an hour.........doble stink, anyone got any ideas how the heck I can stop it from leaking?!?!?!?!?!?

thanks in advance...........

Plumbers teflon tape, used for sealing threads. Three wraps of it around the thread on the gauge in the same direction the nut is tightened, add the correct washer and tighten the nut. Make sure not to use an excess of tape or bits of it will end up in the gauge, but you may have already killed the gauge anyhow if some RTV has got into it. RTV isn't for sealing threads.

I'll second the PTFE tape - I had exactly the same issue.

The seal is supposed to be between made by the fiber washer. If your fiber washer is intact, look carefully at the fitting on the end of the oil pressure line. Perhaps it has a burr or it is cracked.

If the STANDARD oil line end fitting (from Smiths) has been replaced (and they often are once the fiber washers have been lost), then the fiber washer will not help and you'll need the Teflon tape mentioned above. You can use a standard 1/8NPT female to tube compression fitting on the Smiths gauge sealing the threads with Teflon tape.

Good luck but remember if this still has the standard Smiths fitting on the end of the capillary tubing, you're going to need the fiber washer or similar. No amount of tape will completely stop the leak without the fiber washer when the standard Smiths fitting is on the tubing.

I have started to dislike the oil pressure question because everyone has higher oil pressure than I do.

Answering the oil pressure question is sometimes difficult. I like to completely describe the situation. A cold engine will have higher oil pressure until the oil warms and thins. If your relief valve is doing its job, yes, something around 60 psi on a cold engine is OK. After you've been driving the car for a while you need to better describe the conditions at which you observe the oil pressure. For my car, when it has a hot engine idling at 800-900 RPM it has about 35-40 psi. As you increase the revs, the oil pressure will go up.

The short answer to your question would be, yes, your oil pressures sound normal and acceptable.
