My bet is on that its coming in through the boot. I know it does on mine, just cant seem to fix it at the mo, unless i drive around with the trailer on, then it seems to disapear, hence why i know its coming in the boot. Other tell atil is the boot always stinks of fumes when you open it

There was a terrible smell emitting from the exhaust on the Mini my sister once owned and it turned out that a plastic bag had got caught and wrapped itself around the exhaust pipe just in front of the smaller back box. When the exhaust got very hot, the plastic bag would melt and stink like hell.

So it was an easy fix, but someone on another forum was complaining about a terrible smell and I told them to go check for plastic bags and that's exactly what they found stuck to their exhaust.

I still think its coming in through the boot, have you tried that new seal yet?

How far does the tail pipe stick out from the rear of the car, if its stops inline with the rear valence/bumper that could cause it to drag the fumes up into the boot around the seal.
