Right:
The other evening i was out in my car. I had jsut filled up after running quite low. I was driving up a steep hill, over speed ramps (damn things) when the car started spluttering, and the was a loss of power. Stopped, and after have a poke round, called the AA out. THe man reckoned it was the points, took the dizzy cap off, and yes, they were a bit knakkerd (however the engine hadnt been running rough, so i had not looked at them, thinking all was ok) . he cleaned them up and we got home. I brought a replacment dizzy cap, rotor arm, points and condensor, and fitted them today. I ran the car up on the drive, revved it a bit, and it seemed fine, not of the sputtering. Earlier i wen for a drive. I went from where i live to the next town, about 7 miles, and drove round the town. I then had to wait at a set of traffic lights for about 2/3 miniutes. Upon pulling away, i had the same problem. I stopped and let the car cool down for about 5 mins, then went again. THe problem kept coming and going as driving, despite the different remidies i tried (choke out, driving gently, drivng hard).
Now i know my timing isnt perfect, which probably doesn't help, but can any body help? I want to get this sorted ASAP, please.
Thanks
Morley

Could be the coil or a fuel filter/system blockage problem (I am NOT saying this because you let the tank run low, that's another urban legend).

Could be other things too though including just a general tune up.

Coil or plugs leads are a fair bet. Shame Argos don't do Mini spares or you could try the lot 'n take back the bits you don't need

Hmmmm, all the suggestions sound pretty likely... though it could also be that your Float and needle valve need changing.

Ironicly i had just filled up with Optimax (well the murco equivilent), i tend to put a tamk of high octane (usually optimax) every 3 or 4 tanks. I put new HT leads on this evening and went for a drive, and the problem came back after about 10/ 15 mins of quick (dual carrigeway) running, then turning onto a back road. It was solved by letting it cool down a bit, then driving gently wiht the choke fully out, but after about 10 mins or so it returns, and i ahve to do the same thing, so i think it might ba a carb problem.
Next on the list is a new needle, fuel filter (it hasnt been done recently anyway), and coil, but i might book it in for tuning somwhen soon aswell, as its not perfect.
Thanks for the help, any more greatly appreciated!

does it do this everytime you put in the optimax, if so stop doing it, its a higher octane so if your going to run your car on this you will have to adjust your timing accordinglly, or just use ron95, with out any problems

Its never done it before, and ive putting optimax in more than once, its only since the last time i put it in (wich was murco version). Im going to strip down my carb this week to give it a clea nup, and replace the needle while im at it, see if that helps. I dont really want to be buying a new carb...
