Can't find my Engine number

Hello,

I'm new here and want to know which engine is in my Mini.

Motor Number = 12HC18

I searched several sites and forums, but all I can find is Metro 1300 HLE.
If I search forum it sais that the engine 12HC21 should be an MG Metro, but there no reference opn which they base this information. (problem from dutch forum, everyone sais everything, but nobody really knows).

Is there someone who knows this number, or has a site where all number and engine specs are displayed?

Mainly I want to know the specs of the engine, CR, Diff, BHP, and so on.....

I assume that the diff is not equal to the one that is standard on a cooper from 1991. My speedo displays 40 km/h, but I'm actually driving 50 then.

I also searched here, but can't find the 12HC specs in the given sites.

After doing some more searching I found the next data.

12H C17 --> 19 1275 A+ L D I Metro, 8.0:1CR

The L stands for leaded, but I normally use unleaded fuel.
How will I know if the cilinderhead can handle unleaded fuel?

And does anyone know the BHP of this engine?

right you engine is


1275 metro engine its a+ it should use leaded petrol unless the converterd

should have dished pistons with a compression ration of 8.0:1

haha so you go edit you post on me and make mee look like a numppty lmao

the only way to check is to take off you cylinder head and checky for hardend valve seats

and nooo you shud realy run it on unleaded with a addertive something like castrol valve master ect

bhp is somewere around 72bhp i belive for the metro engine

Is there a way to see if the valves are hardened?

And by the way, you have made me very happy with saying that the engine has 72BHP.

to check youd have to remove you head and possibly 1 exhaust valve and check for a insert into the head (this is the hardend valve seat)

and i think its 72bhp standerd but remeber this was for a new engine ware n tare bring this down but i wudnt say by much

go get a rolling road for certainty

73bhp @ 6000rpm, 73lb ft @ 4000rpm, 1989-90: Metro < new this is the metro GTA engine 1275 cc depends what model you metro engine came from will determen you bhp ect

This other website confirms the 9.75:1 and it coming from a van as well.

I rechecked the engine number and saw that it was different then tho one I typed before

12HD16 102800

9.75 : 1 1989 1.3 van

But what is the BHP of this engine.
The standard metro has 63BHP, but the MG has 72BHP.

And what would be the difference in these engines?
The differece I found would be the compression ratio.

MG Metro 10.5 : 1
Metro Van 9.75 : 1

And is it still possible to use the standard parts of the mini?

The MG metro also had a different cam... bigger valves in the head

You'll also find that the van engine has a silly low final drive in the gearbox, probably 3.6 or 3.7

Also fills in one of the missing gaps in the engine number list :wub:

When I use it at the highway it's always in high revs (above 4000).

That's no problem since I usually never drive highways, and when you have less top speed, you have more acceleration :wub:.

Problem is that the speedo is inaccurate.
When I drive 40 on the speedo, my GPS sais 50.
The same with 60 on speedo, 75 on GPS and 80 on speedo is 100 on GPS.

This is a ratio od 1.25.

Based on that the standard final drive of a mini is 3.1 (correct me if I'm wrong), the final drive should be 3.1*1.25 = 3.87.

The only way to get the speed wright on the speedo is to change the pinion. As far as I know.
Does anyone know if it is possible to change something in the speedo?

But can I conclude that my engine has about 63BHP?
It is quicker then a standaard Cooper SPI, but that could be the difference in the final drive.

I'd be very suprised if your engine has the manufacturer's bhp quote, but if the engine's been taken care of... it could certainly be around that figure.

That's right.

Think that it's time for a rollin road session.

When it's an engine with 72BHP, you should see the difference then an engine with 63BHP.

Or I can just accept the fact that I've got a standard metro engine and start mounting some other parts :wub:
