Hi again.

I have changed a lot of the coolant pipework on my 89 1000 city. However, I have spotted a very grotty and perished looking pipe directly below the thermostat housing. The pipe is about 1 inch long and looks like a bugger to replace. Is this worth replacing anyhow? or is it a part which can be left alone forever????

The pipe goes directly down from the thermostat housing 'bulge' to the engine block below.

Cheers for the advice folks.

J

That's your bypass hose. Search for 'bypass' on here for more info, but basically if it goes it's a nuisance to replace with the engine in the car, so do it now while you can get at it.

Easiest would probably be removing the water pump, and make sure you use proper heater hose, not one of the cirmped easy-to-replace bodge pipes :shifty:

Cheers for that Jupitus. Saddly the engine is still in the car. Will have a look at replacing anyhow as it is in a poor state. Thanks for the tip on the water pump removal. Can that be done with the engin in? I'm guessing not1

Too bad the engine is in the car.

As mentioned above this topic was discussed VERY recently. Search back through the past month's threads and you'll find a discussion about replacing that hose.
