I hope no one has asked this before, a quick search didnt reveal anything. I recently bare metalled a door for the mini. then I cleaned it all with thinners. Then I sprayed on anti bloom primer, then cellulose topcoats. A few weeks later I was moving said door, and I knocked it against something and a large chip came out the paint, right back to bare metal. Why havent I got a good adhesion with my primer? And what do I do now? Am presuming its a bare metal all over again.

how did you take the old door back to metal - did you chem peel it or sand it - if you did it with chemicals it may not of had a rough enough surfice for the primer to stick too, how many coats did you do ? and how long did you leave them to dry in between - im not sure on times but with some paints i think it matters

I would say the lack of Etch primer may well be the problem, also, did you degrease the bare metal thoroughly?

thats true if your going to paint on bare metal try and look for an acid etch primer- these kinda bite into the metal to make a good key for the next layer of paint - good for keeping away rust too

was sanded with coarse paper to give a "key". A few weeks between primer and topcoat. 2 coats primer, 3 top.

Didn't use etch primer....thought you only used that on aluminium?

Nope, DEFINATLEY on Steel too! ESPECIALLY with mini's :shifty:

Also, degrease the car before every coat of paint to be absolutely sure...
