hi guys :ermm: another question =[!

im wanting a respray but i cant really afford to have an engine out job & take everything off ie the subframes & what not, so im just looking for inside & out *but not underneath.

from red to blue :/

my friend took his engine out + i wondered if when i did tyhis is it possible to paint the engine bay myself?

+ what paint would i need to use? + what would i need to cover the whole car in to help prevent rust before it was sprayed - if there is such a thing?

afraid it might melt!

like ive said many times before, im thick when it comes to this!

:D hope anybody can help!

You're in luck, this has been covred loads, so Try the search function and you'll find plenty of threads with pics and detailed descriptions showing how to do this. However,.. I'll type some basic instructions up again because i'm nice :D

To paint the engine bay:

So... you've hoisted the engine out and got all the little things like elctrics out the way and tied up, so you should have a nice bare bulkhead infront of you.

Locate and destroy any rust that may have appeared,... Get some Red oxide primer (this is Zinc rich and protects from rust).

Once you've got a rust free bulkhead infront of you,... get sanding.. use either a Flap wheel (this is a drill bit with lots of strips of aluminium oxide paper stuck to it... it strips paint and gunge.)
You want to be left with a nice shiny bulkhead.. some will probaby go right back to bare metal, if it does... just sand it smooth by hand around the edges so it's a smooth transition.

Once this is done, Degrease the car with a very clean rag and white spirit, walk away and come back in twenty minutes... If it needs degreasing again,... keep going. Now spray the whole thing with red oxide primer,... Let it cure (see back of can for details) then you can add you're normal primer and let that cure
*** use lots of thin coats of primer rather than one thick one it sets harder and quicker this way ***

The next bit is up to you, but you MUST degrease again first. ADDING COLOUR.

You could use hammerite,... Halfords spray cans (I'd use these) HiTemp paint (good idea),... whatever you choose, make sure you put it on in light coats, this ensures you get a flat, shiny finish and you wont get any 'runs' (drips) in the paint forming form excessive amounts. When it's hardened, you're done.

That should get you started and give you a basic idea of what's involved to do this properly.

If you want a quick job,... do a quick rub down with sandpaper, preimer it up and degrease, brush some hammerite on.

## if you want to know how to respray a car fully,.. Read the 21 page guide the was Kindly written by a TMF member, it's a sticky thread at the top of the paint section, if you have any more questions, then come back to us. ##

Quick question,

Red oxide or hammerite.

Which is better.

Got to paint my bulk head at some point. Was planning hammerite.

edit,

Ah crappit, I need to read stuff better.

Ta Retro.

:D now that you've read it... Use Red oxide,... then primer,... then hammerite.

so:

1. everything out
2. sand down
3. degrease
4. red oxide primer
5. normal primer
6. degrease
7. hammerite
8. then paint in desired colour?

see i dont really want an engine out job when i go to mr respray man so im looking at painting the bulkhead myself in the colour if possible?

what paints best to use then?

Well you can't really paint the bullkhead with the engine in unless you're just going to do the very top of the bulkhead

what paints best to use then?

I typed in my post:

You could use hammerite

Halfords colour match spray cans

HiTemp paint

if you've got the money...buy a can of each and decide which you prefer...... I would personally go for the Halfords cans or the High temprature paint...
