either low or give em a copper greasing on the bits that touch other bits (obviously not the brake surface though)

cant hurt to change em if not done for a while, still copper grease though!

all available from halfords or such like reputable dealers!

Basically, yes,... it sounds like your Brake pads have worn down and the linings are virtually non existant... change them ASAP if this turns out to be the case, it is dangerous to drive the car.

Most places like Halfords, Motoroworld, MotorFactors etc should have these parts as standard stock items.

Once you've taken the old shoes off,... Get some very light grade wirewool and some brake cleaner spray (solvent), spray some onto the friction lining on the inside of the drum and rub gently around with the wire wool, you should get a lot of black liquid coming off,... this is all dirt and picked up grease etc... Now with some fresh wire wool spray the new shoes with the brake cleaner too and give them a quick wipe over (this gets rid of any surface contaminants that might have somehow got there.)

Right... with the old shoes off and the new ones ready to go on,... give the back plate of the hub a quick blast with the brake cleaner and wipe it down. Now... you'll notice on the sides of the shoes youy have some locating 'lugs' that stick out... Dab a little copper grease on each lug, this ensures that any movement is slick and the shoes cannot seize.

Make sure when you're re-assembling the brakes that you make sure everything is grease free.. the is IMPERITIVE to your safety.

Now adjust the brakes up,... and you're off!!! don't be to hard on the brakes straight away, they'll need to bed in for a few miles or so :D
