right i wrote this out for talkaudio but they dont seem 2 helpful 2day which is strange, i just cant make my mind up

'right first off ive just finished my system and had to do it at a budget so used the best stuff i could find 2nd hand and all works well. ive got some 4 inch mids in the doors, a 10inch JBL sub in the boot in an advised sized box powered by an alpine amp (1x100w rms bridged) all ran of an alpine cde-9828rb headunit.

anyway im nearly at the stage of thinking about an install for my project car (a mini) and trying to use my first system as something to learn from. my system i have now sounds good from inside the car but outside all that happens is i get loads of panel rattle from the boot and rear quarters. i think this is mainly down to the boot area being sealed but any ideas will be much appreciated.

for my project car ive found some door pods to fit 5 inch speakers so i will get these and seal them but im still wondering what to do bass wise. ive got an area under the back seats that has enough room for possibly 2 8inch subs but im not sure about the bass this will kick out. I know a 10 will fit in a box in the boot and im pretty suer a 12 would but i'd be getting very limited on the amount of space for the box. my 3rd option is to mount a 15inch sub against the rear bulkhead as my boot is a sealed unit but i wouldnt be able to fit a box in there. i would possibly drill some holes in the top of the parcel shelf to let air through?

please help me as i dont really know much at all about car audio except dont use 6x9's lol. thanks in advance, rob'

Rob, when u say its sounds C**p from the outside, how do you mean? When i did my setup i didnt care about what it sounds like from the outside, why would i want to spend all that money on my system and then worry bout how it sounds to other people... also what sorta music do you listen to? if u listen to fast dance music two 8"s will be fine... and if you listen to hiphop etc one 12" or 15" will be good, when it comes to speakers ideally you want components up front being powered by an adequate amp.... and the subs want to be powered buy a digital!! it all depends on your budget and music tastes.

i mean the panels are rattling and it sounds as if the car is falling apart, wouldnt be the slightest bit bothered if you couldnt even hear it outside but i would like something for a play at shows. my main problem is my music collection is around a 50/50 split of hiphop and trance music.... just wondering if the 15 will be any good without the box

to be honest i wouldnt bother without a box... they really need them.

As for panels rattling, find where its rattling and stick some dynamat in there or brown bread or whatever ur selected sound insulation is. May take a while but its somet that could stop it.

Go for a good quality single 12" if you got a mix like that... and make sure you invest in some good components and amp to match... Go for some nice Fusion components with matched amp.. and maybe a nice kicker 12" with a 500w single channel digital amp.... that thing will certainly be nice.... with that u mite need some co-ax in the back to balance it a bit better.

no need for co-ax in the back as it'll mess up the soundstage. i think i might go for a pair of 8's under the rear seats and a 12 in the boot. really wanted to keep bootspace though. will spend good money on a set of comps up front, will seal the door pockets aswel that they will go in.

dynamat sound proofing material is the best stuff to buy, simply sticks around speakers, on panels, in the footwells etc, its basically very dense so it takes more vibrations to move it compared to a single panel. If you want to totally remove resonance from the car, you have to fill all the body panels with liquid lead and leave it to set, this is ONLY for show ICE cars though

no-matter what you do there will always be a rattle

sound deadening will help with the rattles. As for speaker choise are you going to use the back seats for the sub? or just the boot? And how loud/low are we going here? if your going boy racer style then we can make it like that unless u want it sfor sq where the design would be completly different

i want loud bass that doesnt distort easily and will puch well (8's) but also drop low (12 or 15) its going to be a show car so i want the bass to be able to make people think what the hell is that and come over. I want to keep the back seat set up as it is though

right so your basically saying that you want both it to be loud yet punchy, the only way i'd see you getting around this problem would be to perfectly match a 10/12inch sub with exactly the right mono amp (possibly two of each)

are you keen on having more than one sub? if so then you can really go to town, have a pair of 8's for when you listen to your punchy dance/trance etc, and then switch over to two 15's!! when you want extremely loud results, i saw a guy with an FTO the other day, 2 15'' kicker subs in the boot, with the boot closed it vibrated my friends rear view mirror 6 cars away

i like kicker, they seem to go really deep! and loud. Im not sure what they are like for puch though!

rob what i would do is have a 12" kicker in the boot, only one as there isnt enough air for two and then try to make something for the 8s under the rear seat, though you will have a job calculating the correct air mass behind the subs.

Another idea is to play with differnt boxes, a bassy sub can be made punchier with slightly less air and a ported box!

yeah i think im settled on having a 12 n the boot and 2 8's under the rear seat. i'll do the maths with the 8's and make the recomended sized boxes but for the sub in the boot im thinking maybe get the box tuned to something low. I reckon im going to try and use Resonant Engineering subs throughout as ive heard these and my god they r good

not sure on the quality and have only ever seen it in miniworld see image below, but i think you can fit a 10"/12" (not to sure on size) on the opposite side of the petrol tank note this has to be a free air sub (lots of $)
