How Do All,

Went to goodwood, saw minis, want more power out of my 998.

Ive already been through the task of fitting a stage 1 and now its time for the cam and some other ideas.

I can go to my local mini garage and have the cam changed from my standard to a fast road 948 profile. But i was wondering:

1. Should i buy just the cam or the kit which included the springs and the lifters Example

2. How much should i be expecting to pay to have it fitted labour wise (knowing that you have to remove the engine to do the work) and id add a oil pump on to the price because whilst your there why not.

Cheers,

Nate

Are you doing any work to the head? The valvetrain and breathing system go hand in hand. I don't know the 948 profile at all, but considered it's labelled 'fast road' I'd assume it would have alot more overlap/duration than standard. End result with a standard head would be no bottom end due to the valves being open for ages and no top end due to restrictions in the head.

When I get round to it i'm possibly going to fit a mildly ported 1275 head and look at something like a SW5 or 266??. Get a lightened flywheel and a higher diff ratio to use the revs too. I'm sure theres loads of people who have actually spent some pennies on a 998 and can tell you more about what works...

Theres some good books out there too, I've got "tuning the 998 a series" can't remember the author, but it's part of the 'speedpro' series and also Vizard's bible. Pretty essential reading if you want to spend money in the right places.

defo change the springs and followers, they are designed to go with the cam.

I've heard you can change a cam without removing the engine by taking a hole saw to the nearside inner wing. Does anyone know how this would work as you can't get to the bearings??

You can change a cam in car but only on a small bore lump - you need the tappet covers to get the followers out.

As an alternative to a cam swap you could look at high lift rockers.

As you've rightly pointed out it's a fair job on a 1275 so it's well worth sorting other internals, crank bearings etc. It's essential to fit new cam followers as a minimum

To make the most of a cam it would be best to use valve springs that can cope with the extra rpm and a head that's bee worked with higher valve lift in mind.

All in stages lads,

Stage 1 is fitted (pukka kit aswell).

If you read the mini mag it recommended fitting this profile along with a stage 1 to a 998 for a boost.

Just wondering what the difference is between the basic cam and buying the kit?

And how much it costs for the fitting?

Nate
