After coming back from teaching at a camp in america for 2 months I ran to the mini to then drive it to the m.o.t station to get tested and failed on a few things, basically both steering rack gaiters need replacing and i have a fluid coming out of the offside shock! Anyone done any of these jobs before?

Thanks in advance!

Jason

Gaiters are easy, need to unwind the track rod ends to put new ones on (unless somebody contradicts this!), just count and write down how many threads you undo so you can put them back on correctly.

You don't say if the shock is front or back, but the front comes off easily, its just two bolts! I had mine off before I even realised it.

aye both easy jobs.

I'd do the tracking after doing the gaiters thought.

As above I think the track rod ends need to come off but it's no drama...When I did my track rod ends I taped a cheap laser pen to the drive flange and made a mark on the garage wall where it hit. When you put the new end on just adjust the toe so the laser hits the wall in the same place. Make sure the steering doesn't move during the swap and you'll get it smack in the right place and won't need to go get your tracking done again! the further away the wall is the more accurate it is, its WAY more accurate and quicker than counting threads or taking measurements to random bits of tape anyway...

cheers man  Yes there probably is alot to go wrong (steering turns, mini falls over, garage falls over etc. etc.). Maybe I'll do an FAQ one day when I get a bit more posts under my belt, I'll be changing them for longer ones again soon!

Thanks for all the info guys! I managed to take a photo of the fluidy shock! Its a GAZ type but not sure what one. Does this look like I need to purchase a new one? Im guessing if I buy one I also need to buy the other side too, just for safety's sake?

Anyone know how much this part may cost also?

Meh, i If I remember correctly I just locked the steering rack up and put a bit of PTFE tape over the thread up ot the Track rod end.

job done. Gaz are re-buildable,.. and rather than going thorough Shuddersfield spares,.. go straight to Gaz fro rebuild parts,... >>HERE<< Excuse their website though lol.
