A couple of months ago I bought a 1979 Mini 1000 Auto. The car seemed to run okay so I got to work sorting the exterior and interior first.
I'm now happy with the cosmetics so now to the engine.... Stage 1 etc will come next year but right now I want to give her a thorough service.

I'll be phoning Minispares with an order soon and any suggestions would be most appreciated....

The current air filter assembly seems to be missing a couple of hoses?

But I'd like to replace it with a pancake filter to tidy up the engine bay. Would this cause mixture problems and what would I need to rectify them? Also what size/type of carb do I have?

The cap on the dashpot is held on with duck tape so I'd like to replace them. Will this Alloy dashpot cover fit? And I can't see a dashpot damper for a pre 1990 mini?

The smell of petrol is quite strong from the exhaust when I start her up and the choke is on. Is this normal or am I running rich? Initial exhaust gases are a little dark on start up.

I was going to buy a new Distributer cap and a rotor arm but I don't which one.

These Rover Performance Lead Set 8mm?
Or these Luminition Silicon Leads for some colour?
Or these Rover 6mm double silicon ?

And some new plugs, are these Spark Plug the ones I want?
But would I benefit from a more expensive type? Minispares List

And obviously a new Oil filter and oil change.

Anything else to make it run nicely?

The drum brakes are working very well and I'm not bothered about upgrading to discs.

When I decide to go for a proper tune up, what sort of carb should I keep my eyes open for? I fancy keeping the 1000cc engine and auto box and just tuning her up to get more from her.

Thanks guys.

Just looked under the bonnet, on the VIN plate is "Car No XL2S1N-*******" and another red plate next to it with "Commission No: N20S-408494A"

What's the commission No??????

Here's a pic of the dizzy cap on the car

I can dig out the engine number from the registration doc if you still need it.

Aaaw, it's a 45D dizzy.

Get the bits local though. Mini spares are good but charge more for those parts. I even did a comparison once.

to be honest you should be able t get most of those parts from Halfords if not a local motor factors(like BA says). would work out cheaper with not paying the shipping charges

Well, mini spares do tend to charge over the odd for easy to find parts. Here's a wee comparison with my local motor factors.

Real Shop:
Dizzy Cap : £2.14
Condenser : £2.20
Contact points : £3.10
VAT : 1.30
Delivery : £0
Total : £8.74

Online Shop (all prices inc vat) :
Dizzy Cap : £4.66
Condenser : £3.47
Contact Points : £2.71
Delivery : £3 (a guess)
Total : £13.87

Sorry about the rambling first post.

Please can someone tell me what size/type of Carb I'm likely to have on my 1979 Mini 1000 Auto. (See pics above)

So I can work out the right pancake filter to buy.
