I sprayed a set of wheels at the weekend just gone, have had no problem with them so far. i used very fine wet and dry sand paper to get the C**p off them, then used white primer (halfords can), applyed 2 - 3 thin coats as if to build it up then put 2 coats of the paint i used on them (merc polar white)
they came up well

i painted my wheels anthracite with rattle cans
sanded them down with 240 wet and dry prime 2-3 coats then appyied 3-4 genorous coats of top coat
then sprayed it with a couple thickish coats of laquer to give a bit of a shine
all cans brought from halfords and took me a weekend to do all four wheels
good luck with it mate
