Hi I just have bought another mini.... surprise surprise

Good runner but seems to be very stiff out of reverse, you have to give it a smack and then it pops back into neutral.

Would this mean it needs a new gear linkage and selector? Is this a big job and would it likely cure the problems. The Gearbox itself seems smooth so its hard to think the problem is there

Possibly clutch drag - try giving it a blip of gas with the clutch in, see if that makes any difference.

Having a cuppa and a think....

reverse is the lowest gear and also doesn't have syncro so it's most prone to such problems.

blipping the accelerator might work, as might disengaging reverse while the car's still moving or pumping the clutch pedal.

Could just be that the idle is too fast.

Try turning the engine off before disengaging reverse if that helps any gearbox fault would be unlikely.

I have been told its had clutch problems in the past but these were meant to have been sorted. What do you mean by drag? So what stick it in reverse put clutch in and give it a blip on throttle?!

Clutch drag is when you shift gear, take the clutch off, put your foot down and not alot happens. Had it once or twice. Dip the clutch and release or coming off the throttle a bit sorts it. Just where the clutch drags instead of giving full power.

This is not the problem. It is disengaging and re-engaging while driving through gears no problem. It is when I am stopped, and taking it out of reverse it is very stiff and you have to wack it inot neural. Is this a gear linkage problem ? Although when the engine is on there is no problem.....

When engine's off there is no problem...

This definitely suggests that it's in relation to the clutch adjustment...

when clutch engaged, do you have any symptoms moving through the gears (when stationary and engine running)
