Have another look, oil cannot come out through a driveshaft gaitor. It could be from the driveshaft oil seal but it's not common for them to fail spectacularly like this.

How long was this drive home with no coolant and a steadily reducing oil level? And how cold had the engine got do you estimate before you made the trip?

If its dropped its oil, then it may be another case of broken box syndrome :!:

It was a good 15-20 mins of cooling down and then about a five minute drive home

First chance I've had to have a look at her........I put the bottom hose back on and then looked to see if there was an obvious leak of the oil. I couldn't see one....the only thing I noticed was that the oil brether had a layer of oil around the top. My thinking therefore is that the pressure got so much that it burst out of there and then hit the fan meaning it was all over the engine. I filled her up with water and oil and she ran fine for ten minutes and wasn't running fast like before she went boom.......

The water stayed put as did the oil....could that really be all that happened??

If you ran it hot enough to boil the oil I dare say it'd come out at a fair rate. I'd get it steam cleaned, change the oil and filter and keep a close eye on things before committing myself to any long journeys. Make sure the temp gauge is working and an oil pressure gauge wouldn't hurt.

Earth the lead on the sensor and see if it goes up to hot if it does you need a new sensor.
(with the ignition on, of course!)

If not check the wiring for a break.

ON the cylinder head just under top hose - little brass boltish looking thing with a spade terminal - if you can't see a wire on it we could've found the problem ;D

Ah! That was connected to a seperate gauge. I had to cut the wire to sort the dash but when I connected back up with a terminal block it still didn;t work.....
