i've been planning on getting a 125 motocross bike for a while and i was wondering if anybody had tried towing one behind a mini saloon before?

i've worked out that the weight of bike and trailer is quite a bit less than half the weight of the car so that shouldn't be a problem. my car is an 88 so am i correct in saying that i can make my own trailer and still be legal?

also, where can i buy a towing bracket for my min?

before people start getting worried my dad also has a towing bracket on his mondeo so i would only use the mini for short distance trips etc. and i have tried using the search option!!

thanks for any help!!

im not sure if you can buy a tow bracket for the mini from new, i might be wrong.

i got mine from ebay and there are allways a few on there from time to time, you might need to change some wiring for a differant flasher relay. i say this because when i attach my trailer to my mini the indicators and hazards flash like there having a heart attack, i do have a later wiring loom which im going to use to see if i can solve this problem though,

hope you find one and good luck

I think it's only 1998 on MPi Minis that aren't homologated for towing. You can get new towbars for Minis (autow.co.uk do one for £116) but eBay is probably a cheaper option. There was a Minus (Mini based kit car) at the Knebworth classic car show and Stanford hall which had a purpose made trailer for the Scooter (think it was a Vespa). The finish on the car, trailer and scooter were equally as immaculate!

I bought my tow bar from Towsure.co.uk, they said on the website at the time that they had the last few so if they still have any i dont know.

Max permissable towing weight is roughly 350kg.

regarding the flashers....

a standard flasher unit won't work if wired to 3 bulbs simultaneously. you can get an auxiliary unit to piggy back the existing wiring, mount it in the boot. Or upgrade the flasher to an electronic one that won't care what load / resistance it has to work with.

Anyone know if that annoying towing indicator buzzer is a legal requirement now?

Its a legal reguirment to have a warning that your trailer indicators are working.

Be that a buzzer or a light

Unless you own a 92 onwards mini in which case the flasher relay is more than up to the job.

Yes, you need to install a buzzer as well, these are simple enough to fit and you just fix it in the boot and wire up.
