Hi, i am about to rebuild my straight cut box with lsd which will be going on my 1380. is it an essential to replace the baulk rings? how do i tell if i need new ones? if i do is it worth going for steel ones? thanks, rich

Guessworks will describe this better than me but if they drop too far onto the syncro cone they are worn out. They aren't completely worn out until they sit right against the gear without ever touching the cone but how long do you want it to last? There should be good clearance. Also if you are re-using them don't get them mixed up, keep each ring with the gear it is currently worn into. Ideally, replace them but if there's little wear it's OK. Personally I think steel ones are better.

It will dpend on the gear set you use, with our own sets we recommend you change to steel baulk rings because of the moly treatment we use on the cone of the gears

Go Dan Go !!

for the cost, while it's apart replace them unless there is little or no wear

Not so sure about steel tho', more competition, which are rebuilt with great regularity.. you have to think of it this way, if the baulk ring is harder then it'll take longer to wear, if its harder than the coating on the gear, then the gear will wear and not the baulkring.. what's cheaper to replace, the baulkring or the gear !
