Hi
I have removed my water pump from the 998 engine on my Mk1 Cooper. I am replacing the cra*ppy concatina type bypass hose with a proper Kevlar one.
Anyway, I have removed the water pump, and I noticed there is a hole about 4mm diameter on the Bottom of it. There is no hole on the top.
This hole on the bottom, what is it for? Is it for lubrication, and if so where do I obtain the water pump grease and rubber bung, if there is sopposed to be one?

Lookin in the hole, I cant see any grease. I dont know if the bearing is a sealed unit or not. I just bwant to make sure about this before I replace the pump on the engine. Agin, there is no lubrication hole on the top.
So, can anyone tell me why this hole is here? Picture below shows me pointing to it with a pen.

Thanks

To allow water out if the seal was to leak, giving you warning of imminent failure.

The older pumps had this hole on the top and was orginaly used to lubricate the bearings with oil

Hi Guys
Thanks for that. I guessed it mught be for drainage, just like the hole at the bottom of the flywheel housing allows oil to drain in the event of oil seal failure.

I will now install the pump (tomorrow morning that is...too busy watching the Argentina-Namibia Rugby right now!!!. Its seems like a newish one, the spindle turns smoothly with a little resistance, no play so the bearing looks OK.

I will use my tried and trusted method of using Autoglym Engine/Machine cleaner to clean it before installing it to the engine!

Thanks
