Right I stuck my Mk2 steering column in my car, fit it on the splines, gave it a solid push down until the bracket on the dash and on the column lined up.
Then I struck an interesting problem (probably really obvious I just didn't know about it). When reinserting the bolt at the bottom of the column, the thing just wouldn't go in easy at all. Took a lot of work to get it half way through, and I gave up after that as I had to go... Is it meant to be so tight in there?
Secondly how flush with the floor should the column sit? It fit over the splines completely, but there's a cm or 2 until the floor and you can see a tiny bit of the steering rack poking up (but no splines).
Finally, do I have to loosen the steering rack? I still don't get why, since I'm not lowering the steering column or anything, but I'll do it if I have to...
Oh and another thing... is the mini meant to make a small noise when jerking the steering wheel from left to right? Comes from the steering rack/subframe/flooк area and isn't loud, it's definitely not a knock, but more like a very muffled tap... Only happens when you turn the steering wheel one way, then turn it the other way... I'm guessing it could be my dodgy subframe mounts?
Eitherway I need this steering sorted ASAP if I plan on keeping the mini...
Cheers guys!

there is a groove in the splines that allows the bolt through, pull the column back out and check the groove lines up with the bolt hole, that will give you the correct location. loosen the four rack mounting bolts (above the subframe bolts on both sides) sort your column out then torque them back up, that way no stress is applied to the mounts

Oops... might have made a new groove
Lol. Time for a new steering rack I guess!
