I am looking to mount an R1 engine into the back of my Cox gtm.
I will be mounting it to the subframe like this.
Posted Image
I want to know how to connect the chain to the shafts so that they drive the wheels in the right direction.
Any pics, diagrams or advice would be great.

There is a chain driven box behind the engine containing two gears and the diff, this corrects the direction of drive

Cheers
David

Chain driven box?
Any type in particular.

Think it uses a modified mini diff with sprocket.

This kind of setup?

If i connect straight to a chain driven diff i'll have six reverse gears.

Not a chain drive diff, a chain driven box containing 2 gears which corrects the direction of drive and the diff itself, these were heavily modified mini gearboxes in the past but now I believe they do a proper cast casing to put the bit's in

Does anybody have pics of this setup or is it all a bit hush hush?

Somebody has to have pics of this setup.
People that have these conversion kits in their cars must have cameras!

It's a fairly new conversion to the market, only a few months or so, I don't think they are many conversions out there at the moment. They do seem to be a bit hush hush with this conversion but I don't know why, it's easy to work out what they have done, but very few people will have the gear to make one of these boxes

Why keep something like this hush hush?
Afraid of someone stealing the idea and producing the same kind of kit for the market maybe?
Zcars never kept things on the Quiet. Had faith in the quality of their product i suppose.
I know one person who has this kit, i'm sure he has a camera.

Its not hush hush as such but Darrens kits are still very new and hes spent the last couple of years working on the kits so its bit too soon to start dishing out any trade secrets as such. Time will come where I am sure there will be more kits coming onto the market, but as we speak fair play to Darren for keeping under his hat so he can make a living out of it

Fair comment! I'm not out to stop anyone earning their living so i can understand that side of things.
I'm just getting fustrated with this diff problem and i'm dying for a bit of good info on this setup,
diagrams, pics etc... I would have mounted the engine 180 degrees the other way (z cars setup) only
i have no room in front of the subfame. This is the only option i have.
Don't want to step on anyones toes so i guess i'll have to wait a bit longer.

I'm in the same pickle as you Dermow, I would like to mount my engine the right way around. In my case it's more of a admission to seeing this solution (with the gearbox of the engine facing forward) is the better one due to several advantages, the greatest one being the improved weight distribution.

This gearbox from Quaife would solve your problem, but at a cost: http://www.quaife.co...ain-driven-cars

This introduces the problem that bespoke drive axles must be sourced. The best thing would be the use of the mini diff.

One could build a simple version of the Quaife box by using the Crown & Pinion setup from the original gearbox. One would have to fashion an oil-tight box with 1 axle and the diff. The axle would carry the pinion gear and the cog accepting the motorbike chain.

Sounds simple, but is probably not!

Hi. I'm new to the board but am really interested in the fitting of a motorbike engine to a small, light weight car such as a mini or 106 but am having a few problems with the finer details and the diff connection is one of the most serious.

1-From what I've read one of the most common is the connection from gearbox out on the motorbike engine gearbox to one side of a diff via one drive shaft and a chain.(just seems a little "botch" but know when space is an issue this has to be done I just wonder how much of an issue the torgue steer is due to the drive coming from one drive shaft?

2-Obviousley the clutch on a motorbike is not designed to take the weight of a car and so must be uprated. Whats the thoughts on that and more to the point the costs?

3-How do you engage a reversing system without having a motor permanent spinning along while your driving?(this ones probably quite simple but just can't see it)

4-Chain life has been spoken about and certainly seems to be an issue on the front wheel drive motorbike engined minis due to its short "resting time". Is it better to have a larger chain(more inertia) or a lighter chain(less strength)?

5-Depending on the choice of motorbike engine(hayabusa, r1, etc) is there issues with which side the output shaft from the gearbox comes out on?

6-Also heard that you need a new baffled sump for most of these engines?

Sorry for the long waffle but planning is in progress and would really like to hear some opinions or post project hints.
