Hi again.

Im sure everyone who regularly looks at this section has seen a load of questions from me lately. weve had dashboards, headlining and amps and now is the turn of the carpet!

ive got a brand new carpet set to fit including the underlay and i cant wait to see it in my mini. but when i removed the old carpet and underlay i dont remember seeing any of it being stuck down to anything.

does the underlay need to be glued to the metalwork or are the 'pins' you bend through and over the underlay on the vertical surfaces enough to hold it in place. and then how do you get the carpet to stay stuck to the underlay? even on the horizontal surfaces is it necessary to stick the carpet down with something? is there some glue im meant to use or is there tape thats better?

thanks

Mine (a '92) has the bendy pins for the underlay, and then the previous owner used a spray adhesive to attach the carpeting to the underpadding. This was just for the vertical surfaces - the horizontal surfaces are just sitting there - I've read multiple posts form people that used nothing at all to fasten down the carpeting on the floor pans, but I plan to use some spray adhesive, personally, as I move my carpet with my big, honking feet when I get in and out... =(

if you need to stick it down you can use double sided carpet tape or spray adhesive. the only bit i needed to stick down was the carpet on the inner sills, and a bit on the wheelarch by the pedals as it kept slipping

Wellplaced Velcro also works well and allows for easy removal in the event you need to work on the floor area.

Glue for the inner sills, wheelarches, the crossmember piece(s) and the upper part of the bulkhead behind the heater. If you have sound deadening felt, glue this to the car, wait for it to dry then glue the carpet to the felt. Use a good quality spray contact adhesive and spray onto both surfaces, wait for it to get tacky then put the two bits together. Make sure you get the carpet in the right place first time, though. You can get popper type thingys to hold the floor sections of the carpet in place - this is the stud bit that gets riveted to the floor:

My best bit of advice would be take plenty of time trimming the carpet to get a good fit - remember you can trim more off but you can't add it back on!

velcro, carpets were never glued on,... imagine what would happen if you needed to do some floor welding, you risk the whole car catching fire without ripping out the carpet. Or what if you got a floor leak,... soaking wet carpets lead to rust, and you can't take them out because you glued them in.

In short. Glue. big no no.

The carpets will stay in fine as they were intended but if you really are worried,.. get some small velcro strips,.. Non intrusive, fapping sticky and No fannying around with glue etc.

That's actually nonsense mate....

My original mini carpets (talking a 1980 Mayfair) had glued in underlay and carpet, and they had been in there from new! My Cooper 35LE also had glued in underlay & carpets, and that car hadn't been touched since it left the factory floor! :P

Almost all cars use some sort of spray adhesive to fix the loose panels in place. It's strong enough to hold the carpet and stop it rucking up under foot, but can VERY easily be pulled out if there happens to be a problem....

I used trade carpet spray adhesive for all the carpets I've made and fitted myself. We've had floods in one of the minis and it pulled out with no problems at all, dried the whole lot out, found the hole, sealed it up and glued the carpets back in again...... Stop trying to scare people ;)

right well i apoligise for spouting balls then Amy. I've never seen any carpets glued in on a Mini, but in hindsight i guess there aren't many mini's around with the original carpets in anymore which is why i haven't seen any i guess. sowwy.

However the rest,... Is not nonsense,.. I'm not 'scare mongering.'

You can rip a carpet out in a few seconds if there's a fire/flood..... regardless of whether a little bit of spray glue's holding it in place. I'd be more worried about all the bolts and seats that are in the way, but hey if you think the glue plays a big part in safety, that's up to you! :P

I don't really get this discussion. Firstly, I'd hope noone would weld the floor with the carpet in place, whether its glued down or not. And in the case of a fire or flood I'd hope that someone would try and put the fire out, or get out of the flood before trying to take the carpet out.

Glue or velcro, I say either. Double sided tape gets my vote though.

Yeah that was kinda my point... it woudln't make the slightest bit of difference what your carpet is stuck down with, in an emergency you'd be getting it out regardless!

Anyone daft enough to weld with a carpet in the car deserves to have it catch on fire :P

I'v just fitted a new carpet set and it al just pushed into place and stays there. The bits round the footwell just rest in place and the bits up round the wheel arch just push in between the floor and bottom dash rail. The ony bits i'v needed to use any adhesive on were the crossmember edge pieces, which i used double sided tape for. They'll mould to the shape of the car anyway over time.
