As the Stig says - ring the DVLA and tell them you've not sold it!!

I have to contact them within 14 days, dont worry im going to lincoln area office to sort this out monday morning, they said in the letter the discrepancy arose because i have just sent the logbook in myself for change of details, the date of the new v5 application (by scammer) predates that letter so there was an instant alert. I have 14 days to contact dvla by letter, phone or in person.
It does say that anyone trying to register a vehicle illegally will be prosecuted, also the identification numbers given do not match my vehicle either.

Im a little hacked off.

Ive seen a few made up Brit number plates on German eBay and thought that was a weird selling item...be good though to put on your car just to tank up and drive!!

God no thanks, im an honest person thank you all the same, with a conscience and for the £20 or so it costs to fill up the tank id rather not get chased by lily law in an 80mph mini.

Thanks though for putting the idea into even more idiot loser scammers that frequent the forum.

Alan...

Be carefull with the email header info, they can easily be forged - but unless they know what they are really doing there is usually some indication of the orginating machine IP.

I hope they catch who ever it is trying this on, deserves all they get! ;) I wonder if they were dumb enough to actually use their REAL address?? Also makes you wonder if some other poor sod hasn't just been taken for a ride with a ringed mini that has your reg.......hope not! ;)

Also this should be an indication to all on this forum, that it would be a good idea to obscure your reg plate details, and engine plate / VIN plate details if they happen to appear in any pics posted up. I only ever leave the reg plate year letter on mine - the rest is blank.....no need to show any more than that.

Good luck mate, hope you get this sorted! Let us know if the DVLA catch them too! :P

well, so long as the evidence is there, the dvla should give the little bugger a good reaming out.... All these anoying systems of regulation which have appeared into our day to day lives over the past few years suddenly come into there own when everyting is in place!!!

:P As I've now said a couple of times. If you don't report and forward these emails then we can't do anything about it and this scammer/lowlife is allowed to carry on doing what they are doing!

You said you thought it was a member on here, if it is I'd like to ban them personally, since this isn't the kind of people we want on the forum, it might not stop them being able to email you, but at least it gets them off the forum. Please contact me about this.

BEEN to dvla this morning, all sorted. They said it was just a formality, they do not issue a v5 anymore without the correct registered engine and vin being compatible and if they are not supplied at all they ask for documentation.... or so they claim. They just wrote to me to ensure that i still owned the vehicle, had not passed it on and also to confirm information from both parties.
They could confirm that the other party had rung on several occasions to check the progress of the application... the plot thickens.

DVLA said nobody could actually have their reg non transferable either so this scam can go on and on forever.
I explained the majority of manfred (i came clean) was a 1979 car, a reshell and the old engine and subby 1989. they said that was neither here nor there. They said make the most of the fact you can recieve the free tax and they were really nice about it. They said DVLA was well aware this had been the case with minis for years.
They also said they would not normally re-register a car nowadays anyway on a Q unless the car was imported with no documents or the car had no documentation whatsoever relating to it to prove its year or manufacture, or kit type cars/vehicles registered for the first time in their new form.

so ..Im as happy as larry now, until the next time!

What's the point in blanking your plates when they are clearly visible whenyou drive on the road.

Is Manfred registered as pre 73 then? Explains why they'd be keen to nick his identity.

Yes people could just copy your registration off the road but Mini's, particularly older ones, aren't as common as they were so it'd be easier to find a match online and even keep an eye on it to ensure your clone is still taxed 'n tested. Also, if you did clone a car you'd be pretty stupid to drive around in an area where you run the risk of running in to the original.

how very awkward that could be if you bought a car and park next a mini in tesco's only to realise you have the same number plates.

Could it not just be a case of someone getting their registration wrong when they were filling in the form? You often get several cars of the same make/model being registered on very similar registrations.

I think you'll find far more scam "artists" on the net, than plodding along your local high street with a note pad!

Don't forget about the number of minis (and other cars) that are exported to the USA with false ages - we've all seen the "1972" Mpi minis or classics "upgraded" to latest spec etc. The prime resource for car details will be the internet.....flea-bay for log books, blank VIN plates etc, enthusiast websites / forums with the occasional detailed history and pics of cars maching the target vehicle for export (or other illegal uses, eg petrol drive-offs or cloned cars).

Why make it easier for some theiving git to get your car ID from a simple web search, than say, having to stand around for hours on end on a street in the hope of finding a matching vehicle...??

makes sense to me.

Belive me when I say that you can find out a *LOT* of information about a person and their vehicles (or just about any other details of their life) with a bit of online research..... with a little bit of bin diving, you can even claim their actual identity - and all the fraud that goes with that! This happens every day - don't make it easier for them.
