Or, paint it one colour, for example cream, and then paint it another over the top, say green, and flat it down with wet n dry til you go through all over the place.. thats what alot of veedub guys do.

That would look pretty cool... kinda like what I've done but properly! Choose your colours carefully tho...

What is it with you people, you can't paint a car to look 'rat' a car becomes 'rat' over time.

It was the easiest way to describe the way it's going to look. Mind you the way I hear it was many car where rat look then a car builder of some fame built his car then just primed it. Sorta new rat look.

Ah, here we go. The great mind of wiki defines a rat rod (I know, slightly different) as :

"Recently, the term "Rat Rod" has been used to describe most any vehicle that appears unfinished or is built simply to be driven"

It's the way the term has changed over the years.
