I have overfilled on my oil a bit, on the dipstick it probably about 5-7mm over Max?! I am wondering whether this can do any damage, and since doing that it has seemed a tad sluggish at the bottom of the rev range, but when you get into the power band of the cam (3000+) it seems fine. I was thinking I may just leave it since my engine burns oil at an amazing rate (its meant too!!), but if it can do damage I'll drain some out.

Yeah it can do damage... Can't remember the details but if there's too much oil the crank can "hit" the oil, and get damaged apparently...

Yea, i didn't realise I had covered soo much distance!! When I came to refill after a WEEK, it was pratically dry again! I was sooo worried it was damaged again! Especially since it started to feel really sluggish. Soon realised this was due to overfilling, is running much better now. The SU has taken the edge off the performance, but I have much better fuel ecomony. Just to make sure its still running ok, I'm going to drop it back to Bill on Monday so he can tinker with it Tuesday.

I think I've burnt the excess oil now anyway as car seems a lot happier, will check later though, will be funny if it has burnt it off in the space of a day!! I couldn't of travelled more than 20 odd miles!!

Nah keeping my webber for track days!! Especailly Castle Combe!!

I didn't think it would use much oil then, after running it dry going to West Sussex and back (via Portsmouth, accidently), I phoned Bill and checked. he said its designed to burn oil, asnd should go through about 1 litre every 150 miles.

Sounds odd I know, the only reason I can think of it doing this is for heat dissappation?!

Dunno what pistons you're using but with your overbore size, there's a good chance of your bore walls flexing, especially at higher RPMs. This lets oil pass by and get burnt (also makes you lose compression and therefore power slightly but mainly you'll notice oil consumption.)

Finally if you're using Omega forged pistons, that would also explain the high oil consumption since they're known for letting oil pass through without too much fuss... part of their design... go figure

Yep, Omega forged that they be! Hmm, I'll see whether Bill notices any damage on Tuesday when he has it, really can't afford another engine re-build!!! Luckily I haven't used it for long periods of time over the last few days!

It's not a sign of damage, just omegas tend to use more oil... no problem with that. Have him check the engine over but I wouldn't be too worried especially since he warned you initially of the oil consumption

Yea, I'm not worried about the oil consumption, just the fact that I had let it run very low on oil (again!!  ) and that after I filled her up it was quite sluggish. But I guess as she is running better now that there can't be that much bad with it. Glad I'm going to see Bill though.

May I add that it was quite old (around freezing) when I was driving and it was sluggish), need to check whether I have the hose connected to the inlet manifold.

I'd be livid if I had an engine burning that amount of oil. Not that am a raving Greenie, but just imagine what ******* your chucking over the car behind you..

What's your crank case pressure like ?

I'm usually so quick there isn't usually a car behind me for a few miles!! (But I always keep to speed limits!!)

OK, don't know how to check just the crank case pressure, but my oil pressure gauge sits at 80 usually, sometimes heading up to 90.
