Any help appreciated?
My '88 mayfair auto just wont start. At first I just thought it was a straight forward battery problem as it would jump start after a few minutes, however now I can't even get the engine to turn over, all that is happening is just an immediate clunk noise from under the bonnet then nothing. The battery and oil light light up at first but after the first turn of the key and the clunk noise the lights go out and it takes a while for them to come back on, any ideas???
This happens both with a fully charged battery and when jump starting from another car. I'm just lost on this 1!
Thanks in advance

Clunk = stuck starter,
If it's not the starter with a solinod on the back then tap it with a spanner when attempting to turn the engine over.

It's not the starter with the solonoid, i'll try giving it a tap tomorrow to see if that helps.
Thanks

Good point scott.
Mindy, take a jump lead and go from the block to the body with it. Make a nice new temp earth strap.
Then try starting. Still clunk then tap it. Or just tap it.
Well I say tap, hit. I used to do it with the driver window open and bonnet up using a 12inch adjustable spanner. Turn the key with my left hand and lift the spanner with the right.

The solenoid itself also needs a good earth. Try bridging the posts on the solenoid to see if it's at fault.

Hey Mindy,
Two plans you could do now.
1) Take the starter off and wash it with some diesel inside out. NOT WD40 as it dose something. So diesel to unstick and clean.
or
2) Phone around the local parts shop and ask for a starter for your car. It would be a re-conned exhange one but their perfectly fine. Mine cost about £30 exchange (they want the old one) then you just refit the new one.
Job done.
