Hello

Please excuse my ignorance, yet again.

I'm looking into a straight cut gearbox for my 1380 mini, ive found a company on ebay selling new (or reconditioned) ones for £425, with a 3.7 crownwheel and pinion?! im not really sure what this means? will this fit straight onto my car? can someone help?

Also ive discovered another one, (pictured) Attached File  straight_cut.jpg   35.81K   23 downloadsit is described as a 3 synchro? what is the difference between that and a 4 synchro? also does it look in good condition, it looks as though one of the gears isn't lined up correctly on the left?! and how much are they worth??

i hope someone can help me out as i'm a little confused!

Many thanks in advance

Nick

You need to chat to Guessworks really, he could build you a box for around the same price (might even be one of his on Ebay).

3 synchro gears are older than 4 synchros but I think you can swap the internals over. I think the piccy you posted is of a remote or 'magic wand' box that may be as much of an issue as you'd have to modify the floor pan to fit it as is & that's assuming you have the selector components to match.

The misaligned gear is reverse it's supposed to be like that. There's no way you could judge the condition of a gearbox from just looking at it. It would really need pulling to bits to check the clearances bearings etc.

3.7 is a fairly high ratio diff your car would be pretty revvy - depends on what you intend using it for.

Oh...

'n 3 synchro means no synchro on first so you'd have to double declutch to change into bottom gear when moving.

Close. It means you DON'T engage first gear unless you're at a complete stop. Double de-clutching to engage first in a car with a 3-synchro box is not very effective and all you achieve is un-needed wear and tear on first gear. 2nd gear is more than adequate for moving forward if you're still rolling at low speed.

Also the box picutred is an old school rod box. Not a remote like later mini's.

Adam, you're getting confused again.
Remote change is pre rod change (and before that 'magic wand').

But you're right in that it one of the older systems, as Ethel has said.

Yep tis remote/wand change 3-sync gear box...

The misaligned gear is reverse it's supposed to be like that.

nope its not reverse - its 1st gear - the hub (bottom of the pic) slides across to the left to engage with the laygear (top of pic) - this id's it easily as 3 sync - as there is no baulk ring and the teeth of the laygear bang straight into the track of the hub..

ttfn,
Dave
