My 93 Mayfair has developed a very annoying rattle, from the exhaust area. It sounds very tinny, buzzy & metallic, and seems to occur as certain parts of the rev range. I have my suspicions that its the heatshield on top of the Cat, which looks like one of the welds has fractured. Anyone else experienced this? My old 95 Cooper had the same kind of noise & a mates Rover Coupe also had the same noise. He just took it off. Is it safe to do so?

Only time I had exhaust rattling problems was when the downpipe support bracket bolt fell out (it secures the downpipe to the rear/side of the gearbox) and my exhaust was then able to flap about up front.
Once that was sorted all was well again and leaving the bolt out is bad news because it will allow the manifold to downpipe flange to separate or even fracture. More so if you have an LCB.
