I also find that a 10mm spanner to be a best fit on the special nut so that would also lead me to M6.
However I doubt they were M6 when originally conceived but they may have been metrificated when the change to single cables happened? Nothing conclusive though I'm afraid.

I have just tried one of each nuts on a spare cable. Both fit and both are sloppy however I would say M6 is the better of the two.

I can actually confirm, I think, the hand brake adjusting nut does need a 10mm spanner, as they did go metric when they changed the cable mechanism. So should be a standard M6 nut, in fact a pair of them to lock against eachother.
Some late wing mirrors seem to have the same nuts on them from when these were changed.

Most people buying a nut would probably be buying a cable as well - afterall the only time you are likely to lose them is if you are taking the cable off! If someone insists on putting a new M6 nut on an original cable that *might* be UNF, I think it would still fit OK to do the job.
