I want to polish up my dashpot. But was thinking it would be easier to do it if i could take it off.

Can you take it off? If so how do you drain it? Does it have a rubber seal on it and things?

or should i just do the best i can with it in place?

You can take off the dashpot there are 3 screws holding it on depending on what carb you have. To drain it you have to take the piston off and turn it upside down to get the oil out, it has a tube on the top of it which holds the oil. When you take the dashpot cover off there is a spring there.

Unscrew & remove the oil plunger first and you can lift the pot off leaving the piston 'n spring on the carb.

Then you'll be able to wonder at the complexity of the SU carburettor >_<

But if i just do that and lift it off won't the oil pour out of it?

I don't know whats under there at all so imagine it'd all just pour out.

All i need to know really is if i can jus undo the bolts, the screw top and then jus lift it off, polish it ad put it back on in the same way.Is there any chance of me breaking anything or much chance for error? If so then i'd be best to just not take it off because chances are with me doing it, it will go wrong!

It won't pour anywhere.

The piston holds the oil in a little well. The dashpot just covers it. Thats it really, it's a cover/damper.

It will if you have a Hif carb. That's the one where the float chamber is part of the same casting, underneath the carb.

If you have the standard carb for a mini city e (as in your details) then this probably won't fit. YOu will have an HS4 carb instead of an HIF carb. The biggest dofference in the dashpot (the only part you need to worry about as far as covers are concerned) id that the HS4 has a ridge from the main body of the carb to the neck.

I think this is right, it's been a while since I had a 998 but I remember having this problem when I bought a cover (I bought a blue one in the end)
