I was thinking of turbo charging the GT in the summer. I will get hold of a metro turbo lump as a basis and tune this to around 150 bhp via the usual methods, ie. Gas flowed head, uprated cam, high lift rockers, +20 thou overbore, higher boost, charge cooler, etc. I plan to ditch the T3 and fit a smaller T2 turbo, to reduce lag. The question I have concerns the spooling time and lag I can expect with this turbo fitted. I have just sold my Volvo T4, and while this was a VERY rapid car, I found the late delivery of boost very frustrating. It didn't really start to boost until 2,500 rpm. This may sound like quite low rpm, but you would be surprised how often I used to get caught out by it. A friend of mine who is well into Maestros is pulling the M16 engine out and dropping in the T16 turbo. From what he says, these use a T25 turbo, and start to generate boost from as low as 1,500 rpm. This sounds much more like it. Has anyone used the T2 turbo on the Metro? and if so, when does the boost start to build and when is maximum boost achieved? Also, just out of interest, has anyone experimented with low pressure turbo applications to boost there already quite potent machines?

The T2 in Renault 5 spec is a popular choice a friend of mine fitted one a couple of years ago, and it provided excellent results.
You'll probably see boost around 2,500rpm, and this Turbo will provide enough usable boost for your planned 150hp, 15-16psi, maybe up to 20psi though you will find the efficiency dropping off at this point.
You could use a T2 with a smaller exhaust housing to reduce lag, but this will reduce power higher up the rev range, and once back pressure begins to build up will limit the amount of boost you can run and power will drop off rapidly.
Basically the Renault unit is very well suited to the 1300 A-Series. Using a mild cam and not dropping the compression stupidly low will help of boost driveability.

Cheers Turbo Phil. I already have a T2, and yes it did come from a R5. I was hoping it would start to boost a little earlier than that though. Good suggestion about the smaller exhaust housing, worth a try.
