1. Is there any issue with mounting the H/U vertically?
2. Would the shock of the door opening/closing wreck it?
3. If I got a H/U that reads from an SD card, it wouldnt have a problem with the door opening and closing as theres no real moving parts?

Why not place it down by your right knee?
Or how about the old idea I shown, of mounting it into the roof?

Mine has a remote (radio not IR) so my HU can be anywhere, and I can play with all its buttons from my seat

you can get a nice little steering wheel mounted remote for the pioneer units, you can unclip it from its mount if you park in a dodgy area so nobody will know that there is any kind of stereo fitted.
Problem with them though, is it need to be in view of the headunit.

that would be the reason that mine doesnt work when going round sharpright hand bends
