I've been donated an unused Amp. It's a cheap-un but should hopefully fit into my grand plans of all things mini.

It's a SPLX 2ch 150W (SPLA150) Amp. My idea was to fit it under one side of the rear seats and have a single 8" sub under the other side. All I want is just a little bit of bass (better than nowt).

I don't know much about subs and amps. I know that I can "bridge" it to make a single channel output. But someone mentioned to me previously that it needs to have a low frequency crossover (or something like that), which I don't think this does.

It might of been Matt at the Hop Farm (I donated you some red carpet, if you remember)!

I should be getting my 8" sub shortly, I have been give all the leads for the amp, but is it the right amp or do I need to get anything else?

Ta!

Okay.

1- Don't expect miracles from the amp... I'll tell you that now >_<
2- If you look at the speaker teminals, it should go + - + - and then across the end + and - another line may well be drawn - when you wire the sub, connect it to those two, and that is "bridging" two channels into one.

On the amp there will be 2 (I suspect) knobs - one will have gain, and the other frequency - the latter is your low-frequency crossover. Because you only want low frequencies (ie: bass) coming through the sub, it cuts out anything about set fequency.

All you will need is an amp power cable, with fuse (batt to amp), earth cable (amp to earth), RCA's (Head unit to amp) and speaker cable (amp to sub).

I had a look at it and it only has a 'Gain' knob - no low frequency jobby.

Will this be a problem?

check your headunit settings, it might have a LPF (low pass filter)

I only bought the Mini in June, so haven't changed the head unit yet. Was thinking of getting a Clarion.

At the mo, I've got (so embarressed to say, but) a Sony xPlop. Which is rather pants, I must say. I think it may have a sub output. One shall check it and see (when I get home).

I am going to do myself a dash in the New Year and will get some components (getting Infinity - on a £40 budget). I suppose I could always power them with this amp? Or would they work just as well through the head unit? Thinking about it, where would I put an amp in the front?

My mate has got some components through his amp, and they sounds great, but they would still be good through the headunit I guess. He also has his amp in the front and has got it under his passenger seat.
