Head off and use a dial gauge and timing disc as per D.V.Book re timing in cam...............
Thanks, but ive been building minis for years and know the procedure like the back of my hand, I asked if anyone had any suggesting timing figures for the STR930 or 649 profile cam other than the 100 degree ATDC suggested by Leyland.

sorry off topic but could i ask what the engine will be used for? im currently looking for cams for my 1445.....
Hi, the engine will really be for fast road, the mini is my second car, so is not a daily driver, and when I do drive it I prefer to be on more country roads and open her up a bit. The 649 profile should be fairly similar to a 286, although it does have a longer duration. I am hoping that the cam will still deal with traffic ok, as and when it occurs, but I expect that I will have to set the idle around the 1000rpm mark, as a future upgrade I can then fit 1.5 rockers and relaease the full potential of this cam, which is known to benefit very well from high lift.

Didn't the 649 get used in some race series?! Might be worth trying to get hold of someone in the Mini7even club and asking them?
It is the Mini Miglia cam of choice I believe. it is a Leyland made race cam, so can be used for originality as well. Seems to prove good in all engines from 850 right through to 1430 and above !

I dont believe it is the miglia race cam, the str930 is the miglia cam as you say, but the 649 is different to the str930. Same 'powerband' but different lift, duration, etc. If you visit kent cams site and download the brochure you'll be able to see that the two cams are slightly different, you'll also be able to see that the 649 should be timed to 100deg

good luck
I thought the only differnece was that the STR930 was slot drive, there should be three part numbers available C-AEG-530 (spider drive), C-AEA-648 (pin drive), and STR-930 (slot drive) all are 649 profile, my data is from Vizard so I dont know which is better to believe Vizard or Kent Cams, I would have thought Vizard was more reliable as Kent will always want to look better than any other given cam and so are more likely to 'adjust' data if anyone !
Either way 100 degrees is the only timing I have found, and it dosent look like anyone else has tried any others?

Ok, I think there is a misunderstanding of which cam this is, this is not a Kent STR930. The cam I have is an Auston original Works Race Cam. This particular cam was bought direct from MG Sport and Racing at Longbridge - formerly Special Tuning/Roversport. As far as I know this is the Miglia cam but in A+ slot drive.
