Sorry? Where's the ring gear come into it?
It is a relatively simple exercise to wire up the starter as described and you will only need one additional lenght of wire. However if you were going the other way...!
well when normally people use the older wing solenoid its becuase they have an inertia starter motor and they only really work with 103 teeth'd flywheels (it think) and i've read that you can change this ring on the flywheel so i was just mearly suggesting what i had read (a while ago albeit) that when they did this exersice they had done this before i'm not sure.
it should be pretty simply though as my car originally had a mk4 front loom but i changed it to mk3 as it was newer so the bat cable is already the correct length and i can use the wires from the old loom to make the others longer
