ok so i posted a thread a few days ago about what starter i needed but now i have another issue.

i have a mk3 loom set up with the solenoid on the inner wing and i'd idealy like to keep it there but i now have a pre-engaged starter.

do i need to use the solenoid on the starter or can i remove it or just connect the starter wire from my innerwing solenoid on to the side of the solenoid the cable popping out of the starter sits on?

You will need to use the solenoid on the starter as it physically engages the pinion.

There shuold be plenty of descriptions on here, if not in the FAQ, of how to re-wire the wing mounted solenoid as a simple junction box/relay so the wiring changes are minimal. From memory:
Move the thick wire that runs from the (wing) solenoid to the old stater across onto the other post so that it is permanently connected to the battery cable.
Connect the other end of this starter cable to the big screw terminal on the new starter solenoid.
Run a new cable of 3-4mm2 from the terminal you just removed the starter cable from to the large spade terminal on the new starter solenoid

Use two spanners and two nuts on the threaded terminal of the new solenoid, one under the ring terminals one over. It is very easy for the threaded part to get damaged inside the solenoid body if not.

well thats not the answer i was hoping for. i swear i have read that people do move to inner wing starters do they then change teh ring on the flywheel then to go to inertia type?

Sorry? Where's the ring gear come into it?

It is a relatively simple exercise to wire up the starter as described and you will only need one additional lenght of wire. However if you were going the other way...!

well when normally people use the older wing solenoid its becuase they have an inertia starter motor and they only really work with 103 teeth'd flywheels (it think) and i've read that you can change this ring on the flywheel so i was just mearly suggesting what i had read (a while ago albeit) that when they did this exersice they had done this before i'm not sure.

it should be pretty simply though as my car originally had a mk4 front loom but i changed it to mk3 as it was newer so the bat cable is already the correct length and i can use the wires from the old loom to make the others longer
