Hey all.

I am doing some reaserch into Roof chops atm. I was wondering, where would I need to go to get my windows cut to size?

Also, is it ok/legal just have the windscreen and back window glass and the others perspex?

Cheers

You can't cut toughened glass so only the windscreen can be cut down, to fit both front and rear. Only the windscreen has to be glass, if you want glass in the sides you could get some made by a glazing company.

A glass place will do it! They might just want a template.

Its very touch and go mate, so it may take a few attempts.

You would be better off going for a glass screen then getting someone to make you a plastic rear window, and quarter windows! The door windows are a little easier to cut down I think.

Awesome, thanks fellas.

So I need to get the front screen cut, as the rear can't be cut?
The side windows, I'll make plastic, its just easier. whereas the door windows, might be a bit trickyer...

If I was you, I would:

Have the front screen cut, as this has to be a proper window, not plastic.

Perspex rear screen.

Perspex quarter windows.

Perspex door windows.

Depends on whether you want wind up side windows I guess.

You can't do anything with glass once it's been heat treated it will just shatter. It helps that the Mini has flat side glass - makes it easier to get some made.

It could be you can use normal wind up glass but it will just sit lower? This would of course also effect the width.

Thats an idea bungle.

I was thinking today on the trip home, to go windy windows or not, I like the slidey windows on the Van, and I know how to convert mk3-on doors for slidey windows, so i might convert them, its easier after all.

Jack, thats what I was thinking, go glass front, and plastic with the others.

So I can’t have my standard Mayfair green tinted wind up door glass cut down for my sliding windows, as it will just shatter?

That's as I understand it. You'd need an overlap too wouldn't you?

Yes, that’s why I went a bought a second set.
Oh well, looks like it will have to be Perspex then, and then have to go looking for a full set of clear front, rear and side opening windows.

You might get perspex or tinting film that's close enough. The film might not be a bad idea for sorting scratches anyway.

Might add I don't know if you can untemper glass to make it workable again?

Lexan is the dogs *******!!! It looks like glass when polished nicely and is severely hard to scratch!

I pinched some from school once to make something, cant remember what, but basically couldnt do it cause it was so hard! Aint it bullet proof or something daft?!

Regarding the sidewindows, the existing windows wouldnt work I dont think, because the door frame has to be cut down obviously.. Im not sure, maybe they will. Its too late for my brain to function.
