Most automotive paint supliers are only allowed to sell paint to the trade .
How much you need depends on what type of paint you use , how it is sprayed , what the preperation is like ,etc .

WoW!
Is this fact? Can someone verify this because I find it difficult to swallow.
How come you can buy touch up cans from halfords ect..?
I wondered why I was having trouble finding paint for my car and kept drawing a blank when I asked paint shops and the like

you can sometimes buy paint straight from the dealers i found a place just of the M3 down near the M27 where i got teh paint for my mini, they were quite happy to supply it, and they mixed up the colour i wanted, i ended up with about 3 litre's i think.
the price depends on the type of paint you want also.

Its all to do with the environmental protection act (think thats what its called )
you can buy a spray tin of paint but you are not suposed to be able to buy enuf paint to do a respray , I run a bodyshop/paintshop my suplier wont suply paint or assosiated products unless i have an account ,accounts only available to registered buisinesses , all paint we get (and thiners etc) is all marked "for profesional use only"
You can still get paint for a respray , you are just not suposed to
we have to have a contract with a firm that disposes of unused paint and dirty thinners . all our paint has to be stored in a special room.
when the environment people inspected our premises , an open paint tin (allowing thiners to evaporate into the atmosphear) would be enuf to shut us down .
do you think they would be happy to let you spray in your garage at home ?
A story i heard , a bloke spraying a car in his garage , a neighbour smells the thinners and thinks its a gas leak , phones up gas board , they report it , bloke gets big fine .
