As above really just curious for MOT purposes as my understanding is that if they were not fitted as standard then you dont need to have them?

Thx

That’s as I understand it, and “think” that anything after 86ish has to have seat belts of whatever kind in the back, even though on some minis that didn’t have them fitted from new might still have all the mounting points for them welded to the shell.

My '84 Mini has no rear belts but does have the mounting threaded holes welded into the bulkhead and rear-most pillar. . . Was it an option?

It wasn't an added extra when minis came off the production line. It became law to have rear seat belts.

Plus there was a time difference between the mandatory wearing of seat belts both front and rear and the mandatory fitting of seat belts! From 1986 in the UK your car must have rear seat belts fitted, although it wasn't compulsory to actually wear them in the back until years later!

Before the law came into force mini shells were being produced with rear seat belt mounting points already in the shells, hence why a 1984 would have the mounting points behind the lining on the rear pillars.

So, for MOT purposes, if your car is after 1986 then it should have rear belts fitted. Unless you can prove that your car is a 2-seater!
