Sounds like you are tham man to solve the question - we'll just send you down there to ask if all old cars have to be MOTed or if there are exceptions! :P

I have a vague recollection that both recovery vehicles and fire engines are MOT exempt...

The company i work for supplies fire engines to west yorkshire fire service, they return to us for maintainance
and repair but are never MOTed.Thay are also tachograph exemt and speed limiter exempt.

Showman's vehicles are MOT exempt IIRC - which doesn't really fill you with confidence in the fairground rides that they haul around!

Good god, I would hope so! :P

Can you immagine a fire engine with a speed limiter?.......... Possibly not the best idea on earth. >_<

The tacho would be interesting too - " sorry, the fire engine will be there in a few more hours, as the driver is still over his tacho hours...." :(

Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if that DID eventually happen though, and ironically under the guise of "health and safety".

I see what you are saying but as it happens when we dissable the speed limiter which is part of the engine ecu programing
the truck still struggles to reach 90kmh because its so heavy ie.crew/equipment/its own extra bodywork and have you worked out how much water weighs

Oh I know they are not exactly "speed deamons" on the road, but just the thought of an actual speed limiter on an emergency vehicle........seems somewhat counter productive...
Give it time though, I can see a time when all road vehicles will be limited to 20mph, and fire engines will prolly be included (safety first - gota think of the children who might run out in front of the laaaaarge RED truck with blazing horn and two-tone sirens, plus BLUE flashing and strobe lights.......they are hard to see afterall....). Health and safety guidence law is beyond a joke these days. >_<

And yes, I have a very good idea about the weight of water at the moment - currently keeping an eye on some structural cracking on a building that has slightly over 2 1/2 tonnes of water bearing down on an area that does not have as firm a foundation as the rest of the main structure (old victorian building - foundations......what foundations??). It's slow, and has taken over 15 years to move more than about 5mm, still - not something to ignore! :P

I would guess a standard fire engine carries about 4 or 5+ tonnes or so onboard, so I can see that would defo be a challenge to acceleration and top speed! :(
