when i pull up on the stalk to flash the lights nothing happens but when i push down to swtich to main beam they work, but like i say only when the ignition is on or the key is at postion II
whats the likely cause of this? wiring or the actual stalk?
my drivers side indicator is also fashing very fast but i'm pretty sure that the front bulb has failed.
Thanks

I think i have a probem with my headlights, i've done a search and cant find anything specificaly about this probem, but i can only flash my main beams when the igntion is at II or actually on.

The indicator problem will be the bulb.
Why do you want to be flashing your lights with the ignition off ?
I'm pretty sure this is normal but I can't say I've checked on my mini to see if its the same.

pretty sure you should be able to flash your lights with the ignition off becuase its on the same fuse circuit as the horn and radio memory ie permanant 12v
do your lights flash when you pull the stalk towards you or only when you push it down??

I think your right that it should flash with the ignition off, the only problem I am seeing as I look at the wiring diagram is that the flasher switch must be at fault or the wiring to it, it can't really be anything else if the horn works.

Latched main beam should also work with the ignition off but the main lightswitch must obviously be on. It's a different circuit from the flasher even though it's the same bulb and element.

Does your horn work? The horn is supplied by the headlamp flasher circuit. Both should work with the ignition off.

hey dan, yeah the horn works, i presume the head lamp flash function is via contacts on the stalk control, so that would mean i need to replace the stalk, is that right?

Yes in theory but I can't work out how the main beam has become linked to the ignition. That would be a major problem in the switch as the only ignition source present is the indicator feed and the headlamps would blow that.
its very strange its not always been linked only since yesterday afternoon, i've been having some intermittant problems with the lights but i dont believe the pull up headlight flash of the stalk has been working in the month i've owned the car

If the headlamps are attached to any fuse in the fusebox they are attached to the wrong one. The headlamps are unfused in most Minis. The lamp flasher is fused but not the lamps.
right, i'll have a look tommorow, is the unfused side the left had side of the fuse box? and is there a seperate connection for the flasher than the toggle for the main beams?

When you say that the main beam comes on when the ignition is at position II, is this with the headlights on...? Or do they come on all the time....? Couldn't work that out from your description.
