they'll be referring to the gear change selector seal

where the shaft enters the gearbox from the gearstick, common problem on most mini's (including mine) you can buy a repair kit from minispares, comes with new seal, gaitor and bush. about £5

link

not too hard to fit, although you need to disconnect the linkage, which requires drifting out a roll pin that can be extremely seized if you're unlucky, but if its leaking oil, it might not be a problem as it will be well lubricated :D

Haynes will tell you how to do it, jack the car up, put it in reverse, you'll see the pin (one closest to the gearbox) just drift it out with a suitable tool, i use one of those precision screwdrivers, as the screwdriver bit fits inside the roll pin, and the body of the driver is the same as the pin itself, so it lines itself up perfectly. then tap it with a hammer until it is out. then just remove the linkage and change the seal

don't forget to put the new dust cover back on before you re attach everything

you need to clean you engine as best you can gunk etc and wash it clean

next park you mini over a big bit of cardboard and go into your house for the night

next morning go out side and see where the oil has leaked from, by looking at the card and drips from the engine

the usual place is the gear selector rod (the bit between the gear stick and the engine) its at the back

I had loads of oil leaks, my oil feed pipe was bent, then the pressure switch was leaking for some reason, fixed all of them and I only have a small leak comming from the same place. I might also look into getting this repair kit.

common 998 leak is the breather plate on the back of the engine. take plate off, turn it on its back across a flat surface so the internal bit is sticking up in the air. where the bolt goes through, hit this a couple of times with a flat side of a hammer. thorooughly clean it with gunk or similar. bolt back on with a new seal and this should seal properly.
