The engine oil in my escort is like a light brown coloured glue, the engine struggles a wee bit to start on cold days like this but it still runs realy well and the temp stays steady. I thought the head gasket was on the way out but now with it runing ok i'm not so sure and the old cvh engines are not really known for blowin gaskets. I was thinking it could just be years of sludge and doing an engine flush, any ideas on what it could be would be appreciated. >_<

Engines can go rusty on the inside! Lots of short journeys = condensation. Long long time since I've played with a cvh engine, but if memory serves the breathers on them were always blocked and they always seemed to suffer with condensation, well they were on all the ones that I ever played with, normally old and neglected.

Is it using any water?

If it is not using any water then that would be my thinking.

oil emusivisation, thats thats caused on short journys where it doesnt get up to temperature

oils always thicker in cold weather tho and because of this the crank has to drag through the thicker oil causing more resistance, which is why oil has the normal visco number and the winter rating 20W(winter) 50. the lower the number the thicker
also in cold weather the fuel doesnt atomise and bind to the air molicules as it does in warm weather or when the engines warmed up

i also think its only classic oil thats green (the stuff from halfords in the tin) and alot of oils are brown in colour, synthetic, semi's and minerals.

Thanks, it's not using any water thats why i was scratching my head, wondering where the water was coming from. Sounds like it could be condensation as i've been keeping it outside and doing a fair bit of short journeys recently after leaving the car for a few days at a time. It had spent the previous 20 years of its life in a garage so i guess the elements must be getting to it.

The oil in my mk3 cvh escort is perfect, but then it's only done 20,000... I'd definitely change the oil for a start, and check it again after a while to see if it's returned.

Lucky man, mine is at 80,000 but apart from the valve seals needing done it has never given me any probs, my favourite motor of the eighties. is yours a three or a five and a 1.4 or 1.6?
