Yea... that's the trouble with cats (and dogs), I guess, they become such an important part of your life.
Very true, we had a cat called Florence (long story behind that) and she lived for a LOOOONG time - she was AT LEAST 22+years old - we were not really sure of the exact age, because she was a stray that we took in.......22 years ago. She was still quite young when we took her in, so she prolly wasnt older than 25 / 26 max. Still, a very long time for a cat.
She was such an odd cat, I discovered I could make her come running to me........by whistling for her (she thought she was a dog...), we had a dog at the same time, and the two of them used to sleep next to each other, and now and again she would sleep on the dogs back! (dog wasn't so keen, but put up with it) When we took the dog for a walk, she would follow along with us, and if me and my mates were going anywhere, we had to sneak out past her, or she would follow us everywhere.
Like most cats, she brought in rodent "presents" for us, although unlike the rest, she was no hunter! The rodents she would bring in were stiffer than a brick and had been dead for quite some time (I once picked one up by the tail, it was so stiff, I could hold it horizontal !), but she would always pretend she had battled hard with said rodent.

She DID actually catch a LIVE mouse......once..... She jumped, caught it......then looked at us as if to say "OK, I've caught it....NOW WHAT??"

She also slept on the beds....well the pillow RIGHT next to your head, so when you tuned over.....you got a mouth full of fur.

If you picked her up, she was so happy (loved to be carried everywhere) that she would start licking your face and nibbling on your ears, while purring.
Oh, and she LOVED prawns and shrimps, and we had to make a weekly trip to Tesco's fresh fish counter to buy them - because she wouldn't even LOOK at any other type.
We had her for so long, she was like part of the furniture. She died from old age about 2 years ago, and even though there are a couple of other cats, it still feels odd to not have her around.
