Would a "forecourt cleaning " degreaser be ok to get rid of oiley deposits?

Not really IMO, if your going down the soap route i would seriosly recommend using traffic film remover, they usually use it at truck washes and when used neat it just strips all dirt and oil off.....if you put this stuff on your hands you can feel your mouth go dry as it strips the moisture and oil out of your hands (well feels like your mouth is going dry but you get my point :D)

Here is a link to a site which sells it....... CLICKY

its funny you should say that peeing on it would do it. bmw used to leave some of there blocks outside do destress mainly the 2002 turbo blocks. aparently leaving it to go cold and warm up lots of times destresses the iron and apparently the work men used to *yellow human water* on them.. dont know why they did that because they still had to use them afterward, silly germans..

Have you been watching top gear? or whatever this was on?

Anyway, for the engine itself gunk, but I find electrical switch cleaner works well, high pressure cans (SuperSolve works) spray once, leave to soak, and spray again for all the rubbish to come off, works wonders on gearbox casings and things.

Also believe it or not, tomato ketchup is good for aluminium as it doesn't 'run off', but does contain vinegar, so will clean stuff slowly...

I went to my local mountain bike shop and got an aerosol can of degreasant for bike chains/bearings etc. Worked an absolute treat, it was £7 and I didnt have to use a toothbrush in tight places as it just blew the dirt out. I was using it on the block but the degreasent running down also cleaned my gearbox.
Plus when it evaporates it leaves no film so you don't need to wash it off.
