Hello, just a quick question.

Our woody estate has suddenly developed an irritating problem. Whenever you take your foot off the throttle suddenly, the car stalls. I have tried adjusting the idle speed a bit, its currently idling very high at 1400 rpm, but it still does it. The revs drop off suddenly and go below the idle speed.

The car was rolling road tuned last year at Pete Baldwins, and has always run perfectly well. The ignition is electronic, and i replaced the dizzy cap, rotor arm and HT leads yesterday but it hasn't made any difference. The alternator is giving a nice charge to the battery, and its a fairly new battery, so i'm sure it isn't battery related.... Any ideas...?

The only parts of the ignition i haven't changed are the spark plugs and the coil.

Oh, and the dashpot is topped up with oil, and there are no air leaks to the carb or vacuum advance that i can find...

It doesn't make any difference, even when the car is fully up to temperature it still does it...

Does it re-start again immediately?

Are there any other symptoms, such as a mis-fire when re-starting, or any other poor running in general?

My initial complete stab in the dark at an answer is an air leak from somewhere....

My thinking being that when you suddenly take your foot off the throttle the engine moves very slightly, causes the leak to get bigger, leaning out the mixture and causing the stall.

Or maybe a split in a vacumm (I never really know how to spell that word) hose.

i would agree with JB.

my car had a similar problem a few years back and i couldn't find the solution for ages, then one day i changed the oil and filled it back up a bit fast and it all leaked out of the rocker cover gasket at the back of the engine. it would seem that a small section of the gasket had not sealed at all.

new gasket, problem solved :-

what conditions the stalling, when driving ie when the engine being put under load then throttle let off fully or put in lower gear and throttle off?
id think airleak too, when the throttle butteryfly closes the pistons still trying to draw in air, if a gaskets split air will be drawn through there.
How does it run at crusing engine load, smooth acceleration aswell? because id also think a split gasket wouyld be leaning the mixture at all engine speeds
try colourtune if you have one perhaps only problem with that i would think is the engine isnt being put under load

Yeah, i'll get the colour tune out i think. The car runs perfectly apart from that, always has.... Its just as soon as you lift off the throttle fully it dies, then restarts fine. There are no leaks in the vacuum, so i think i'll take off the carb and reseal it, and check all the air breathers on the carb and engine....

Thanks for the replies.....

does the carb have the pipes from the crankcase conected? might be the same idea about air entering leaning out
