My 98 Cooper gearbox is out for rebuild.
After the rebuild, it is very difficult to select the first and the second gear.
The gear selection is OK when the engine is not started.
After started the engine, first engaged in the 1st gear was OK. While the car is in motion, with the clutch padel depressed, I could not select the second gear. Selecting the third gear and the forth gear is OK. When the car come to a complete stop, I could not select the first gear.

Any advice will be helpful....

I was thinking maybe it was caused by the clutch?

Clutch is out of adjustment.

To check this, if when you select reverse, it crunches, its the clutch not fully dissengaging.

New baulk rings ar tight to start out with and to get better with use, if reverse is not crunching it may well just be the new baulk rings

I don't think the baulk rings would do anything if the car's not moving so defo sounds like the clutch. You could try pushing it engine off; in gear; clutch pressed to see if the engine turns.

New baulk rings grab and tend to be difficult to select gear when stationary

But with a fully disengaged clutch it would be the same as with the engine turned off.

Believe it or not just had one of my customers come back with similar issues... newly rebuilt box on a new engine and clutch (verto) only 5k old...

The bite was nice and high on the pedal, but all gears were difficult to engage and reverse ground like a goodun.... went out for a test drive, and nothing mechanically wrong with the box as I could change gear perfectly ok matching engine to road speed andnot using the clutch, but when coasting in 4th, if I dipped the clutch the engine would not come back to idle which suggests that the clutch is dragging and as such the box is driving the engine. knocking it out of gear and the engine would idle pefectly in neutral...

Something which maybe useful for you to check ??

Also when stationary, engine off, on level ground with handbrake and footbrake off, start the car with clutch depressed, if you get any forward movement, then the clutch is dragging.

Thanks for all the advise.

I have tried more detail today morning.

a. No forward movement when start the car on level ground with handbrake and footbrake off, with clutch depressed.

b. Reverse gear can be selected without any crunching noise.

c. When the car is started, depressed the clutch - all the gears can be selected without problem/

d. While the car is moving (in first gear), difficult to select the second gear. When I forced into the second gear, crunching noise can be heard. Change to 3rd gear and 4th gear is no problem.

Suspect the baulk rings..... will check more.

Any new advise is welcomed.

With the above symptoms, I'd suspect the baulk ring too.

However, and alternative would be that the friction surface on the gear has been worn away, even with a new baulkring this could cause the same symptoms.

As you say the box was recently reconditioned, then I'd be contacting the reconditioner.... ( Nope, don't think I've sent any to Hong Kong yet :( )
