Hi guys

Can anyone tell me how to get hammerite out of paint brushes??

I've tried many things, including the hammerite thinners and detergents and all kinds of stuff, but hammerite behaves different to any other paint and seems to bind itself to my brushes!!

Any advice would be appreciated!

Cheers

Aid

I've always used celly thinners.

But if they're cheap brushes,.. the thinners will eat them :D

Usually i jut buy some cheapo 99p brush sets and use them and bin them.

Acetone will clean them but it soaks into your skin if you get it on your hands. Melts hammerite though.

i used to wear rubber gloves (vinyl disposable ones) for hammeriting. when you have finished, dip the brush in the hamerite, hold the brush eng in the glove palm and take the glove off so its inside out around the brush and wrap round handle.

paint will still be wet next day when you take glove off and you can carry on.

I always use paint clogged brushes when i'm stripping paint with nitro mors. Eventually it gets rid of all the paint stuck in the brush. Might cause problems if you don't clean the nitro mors out though and then go back to painting with it.

If you want to use them the next day either wrap them in a plastic bag & put an elastic band around the handle... or get an old cup/beaker, fill it with white spirit and put the brush in there overnight. The next day just drain the brush best you can, mix it into the paint for a bit and carry on.

Soaking them in water will not work because hammerite is solvent/cellulose based...

But for what it's worth yeah just get some cheapo brushes next time :D

I’ve always left the brushes in white sprit and the next time i use them i rub the brush across a wire brush in one direction, which tends to loosen the old paint, removes the lose bristles.
